The Elder by Celia Aaron is a contemporary romance
that is heavy with intrigue, suspense, murder and small town politics. The story opens to Randall King the father of the King
family being killed. Arabella Matthews, a single mom with a good heart,
is put on the case as the lead detective. She is the type that is dedicated
to staying the course and searching for leads no matter what until a case gets
solved, to find justice for the people of her small town. Benton is a strong
hard working son who found his father dead along with Benton's brother Porter,
the county Sheriff was there too. Benton was a hard character to
get a handle on…he was rigid yet he was also in shock over the secret life his
father had and he was coming to terms at the same time during the
investigation. He also was clashing with the lead investigator Arabella and he
also was attracted to her. So I found myself on the fence about him as a
character while I totally enjoyed Arabella. She was awesome, a hardworking woman
who was attracted to a possible murder suspect and she was trying to solve a murder yet she did
it like a boss. This was really great mystery story along with a
wonderful love story. Benton and Arabella come together over his father’s
murder then there is this uneasy truce
where they become friendly and from there they get closer and there is this
chemistry which is nice while all this is going on between them the body count
continues to rise. Also there is some nice group of secondary characters that
round out the story and deepen the story and make it more colorful. There was
many twists and turns that kept up until the very end which led to a great mystery/suspense
with leaning toward romance element- if I had to classify this story, it is
more of a mystery/suspense with romance edging the story . I look forward to
reading more of this author.
