Learning to Fight is a debut book written by J.M Black and I really enjoyed all the characters introduced in this exciting new series. After a relationship went horrifically wrong, Maggie is finally getting herself back to the land of living and where she feels ok enough to step outside her comfort zone and start living life. It’s better than the hiding she has been doing for the past year which had been quite necessary. Maggie’s story will make you cry for her, want to hold her yet root her on in her journey toward emerging to this stronger self. When her doctor recommends that she start with self-defense lessons, both Maggie and her father think this is a good idea until they find out her instructor is a guy. Then she meets Max and wow the chemistry between this was phenomenal. He makes Maggie feel safe and that is something she most desperately needs during this time but he also challenges her to want to get better, be better and hope for more. Max is doing a favor for a friend by taking on a new client but he didn’t imagine this client would be someone who would change his life in a blink of an eye. Maggie and Max will immediately grab your attention and keep you hooked on their love story. There is heartbreak, angst, drama, and some intense chemistry between Max and Maggie that makes this a really great read. I also love the secondary characters that pop up in this story like Charlotte, Max’s sister. I am dying to read her story next. I will say there was some minor grammar mistakes but I am not holding that against the author. For a 1st time new author, this was one plot that kept me reading. The way she deftly handled sensitive topics was great. I also liked the way she introduced the secondary characters and how they mingled in with the main characters. I really enjoyed Learning to Fight and am looking to read more from Ms. Black. I have found myself a new author to read!!
