It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents’ house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. Yet we saw something in each other that would link us in ways that couldn’t be broken...no matter how hard we tried.
I loved Manning before I knew the meaning of the word. I was too young, he said. I would wait. Through all the carefully-chosen words hiding what we knew to be true, through his struggle to keep me innocent, and through infinitely-starry nights—I would wait. But I’d learn that life isn’t always fair. That no matter how much you achieve, none of it matters if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first, that didn’t matter. My older sister saw him next.

MY REVIEW:
This was a travel back in
time and a look back at a relationship of how forbidden love started. Jessica
Hawkins takes us back to the 90's in this first book in a 3 book series.
This is only book 1 and wow, does it deliver the angst, the pain, the love, the
want, the craving- things so powerful
and epic , that I cannot wait for book 2.
In this book, we have Lake, 16
years old, who has a good, responsible head on her shoulders. She is sweet and
kind and is very innocent. She does everything she can to live up to
expectations that her dad has for her, which means her future has been planned
out. Then we are introduced to her older sister Tiffany who is wild and
considered the black sheep.
The hero is Manning, is 7 years old than Lake. He meets her
one day while he was at work on a construction site. They were just friends but
Lake has deeper feelings for him that she doesn’t share. Manning finds Lake’s innocence and her
sweetness things that draw him to her yet remind him of painful things in the
past. They are doing fine until Tiffany comes into the picture and
Manning starts dating her. Tiffany is a total party girl , someone who
is totally selfish and doesn’t care about her sister. Manning is a really good guy and he really
cares for Lake, for he starts to realize he cares more about her, as the story progresses
, cares about her than just as a friend but is torn with his feelings. Something awful happens and he's blamed
but he will protect Lake No matter what.
The book ends on a total
cliffhanger and now we have to wait for book 2 to see what happens to the MC in
this story. Let me say, this has a lot of angst, passion, pain, and yes,
Love-for Lake loves Manning with all of her heart and Manning does love Lake. I
really loved the way the author kept the flow going and the pace of the story
was fabulous. I seriously cannot wait for the next book .
My rating: 4.5 stars ****
