The boy next door. That’s what he was. Dash Frasier—my hero from the day we met, when I was six and he was nine. His sister was my best friend, the three of us one happy crew. Then one sweaty summer night changed everything.
No one understood me like Dash. No one made me feel so loved. That’s why, when he skipped town, it wrecked me.
Now I’m older. Wiser. I’ve just snagged my dream job, writing at a film studio. The lead animator on my project? You guessed it.
He’s not the boy next door. Not anymore.
I’m guarding my heart this time.
But Dash has secrets that could break us both.

The Boy Next Door is a unique story, full of emotions , angst and a tight plot. Dash and Amelia knew each other when they were children. To Amelia, Dash was her hero and then suddenly one day, he ups and leaves her with no warning which devastates her. Years later Dash returns to Amelia and they find themselves working together. They have to pretend as if they have no history together when in fact, the sparks between them is pretty intense. Dash wants to act on the chemistry but he has a pretty deep and dark secret that he is afraid to let out. So he plans to just let Amelia sop his ego up and give him that boost he needs –thing is, how many times can Dash continue to hurt and break her heart before she just finds herself completely broken ? Will Amelia be able to live with only part of Dash or will she demand it all and if she cant have it all, walk away from HIM for once and let the past be the past and decide to write herself a new future?
This story has some pretty intense scenes and it’s deep with many twists and turns. I enjoyed the story- the only thing is I wish I learned Dash’s “deep secret” midway thru the book, not at the end…that’s my only critique about the story. Otherwise, this is a steamy 2nd chance story that is unique in the way the characters have a past and how they reconnect and the ending is definitely different in my eyes. I loved Ms. James’ writing style and will definitely look to read more of her books in the future.
